Modern Warfare 3 will hit store shelves just in time for the holiday shopping season this November, according to news obtained and released by Kotaku. According to the blog, “multiple sources” have confirmed that the game will be released on November 8th, 2011 and will pick up where Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2 left off,
completely changing the way people perceive the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare shooter franchise.
Here’s what we know: Modern Warfare 3 will span the globe, much like the previous game. The player will fight street battles in major cities like London, Paris, and New York, and many of those awe-inspiring places will be open for the game’s multiplayer modes. Modern Warfare 3 will also reportedly tie up a number of loose ends from the previous two games that left players hanging, and pick up almost immediately after the cliffhanger ending of Modern Warfare 2.

Multiplayer also makes a strong comeback in Modern Warfare 3, and even includes new game types and tons of new maps in addition to some of the older, more familiar multiplayer modes. None of Kotaku’s information has been confirmed by Activision yet, but it all looks solid, and it is unlikely Activision will stay quiet for long with this much information out in the wild.
The site cites multiple unnamed sources in reporting the planned release date, as well as preliminary plot details detailing anti-terrorist military operations in a wide variety of domestic and international locations.
The report also includes concept art, character models and details of multiplayer maps and modes, including a survival mode that involves holding off a never-ending waves of increasingly difficult enemies.
We've contacted Activision for comment on this information and will let you know when we hear back.
2007's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare sold over 13 million units across the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, while 2009's Modern Warfare 2 has sold over 20 million copies, according to publisher Activision.
Modern Warfare developers and Infinity Ward founders Jason West and Vince Zampella were ousted from the company last year in a dispute over alleged unpaid royalties. Many other Infinity Ward employees joined the pair at newly formed studio Respawn Entertainment.
In the wake of the mass departure, Activision announced Sledgehammer Games would take over development duties for the next Call of Duty game, though it's unclear if that means they're working on Modern Warfare 3.
At the time, Signal Hill analyst Todd Greenwald said he expected Modern Warfare 3 to "easily" sell 10 million units regardless of the developer.
